Impact of Servant Leadership on Employee Resignation Intention in North America

Abstract

Employee resignation results in financial losses and disrupts organizational stability. In North America, voluntary turnover rates exceed 20% in key industries, costing businesses billions of dollars annually. Leadership style significantly influences employee retention, with recent studies identifying authoritarian leadership as a primary factor contributing to organizational cynicism, reduced trust, lower engagement, and diminished job satisfaction. This study is a systematic review examining leadership styles and turnover intention, focusing on authoritarian leadership, a dominant model in China, by synthesizing peer-reviewed studies to offer a thorough analysis of the issue. A thorough review of the literature was conducted using Google Scholar, Scopus, Web of Science, ProQuest, and EBSCOhost to find studies examining the harmful effects of authoritarian leadership, the influence of organizational cynicism, and the importance of adaptive leadership approaches. Implementing leadership strategies and balancing structure with employee support can strengthen trust, enhance commitment, and reduce turnover. These findings offer practical insights for HR professionals and business leaders seeking to improve workforce retention. Future research can incorporate quantitative surveys measuring leadership perception and turnover rates, along with qualitative studies exploring the lived experiences of employees through interviews.
