Impact of Depression and Sleep Disorder in Modern Life

Abstract

Depression and insomnia significantly affect modern life, impacting millions globally. According to the World Health Organization (2023), over 280 million people around the world suffer from depression, while nearly 30% of adults experience insomnia (Bhaskar et al., 2021). These conditions often occur together, leading to serious consequences such as reduced productivity, impaired cognitive function, and an increased risk of chronic illnesses (Riemann et al., 2020). In the workplace, mental health disorders cost the global economy approximately $1 trillion annually in lost productivity (World Health Organization, 2024). This study is a systematic review of the literature providing an authoritative account of existing evidence using reliable, objective, thorough, and reproducible research practices. Key themes uncovered in this study illustrate the urgent need for integrated mental health policies and include the bidirectional relationship between depression and insomnia, workplace and societal implications, and the effectiveness of cognitive-behavioral therapy (Harvey et al., 2021). Future research can conduct a quantitative longitudinal survey to assess long-term effects and qualitative in-depth interviews to explore personal experiences, providing a holistic understanding of the issue.
