Servant Leadership Impact on Adapting to Canadian Culture: Iranian Graduate Student Perspectives

Abstract

This study aims to shed light on the potential benefits of servant leadership (SL) in fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for cultural assimilation. In this context, SL emerges as a valuable approach to facilitate their adaptation process. This research design is based on action research to basically explore the perceptions of working Iranian graduate students on SL’s impact when adapting to Canadian culture. By investigating this topic, the study focuses on the challenges faced by Iranian graduate students when adapting to the Canadian culture. These challenges may be due to cultural differences and unfamiliarity with Canadian norms. The research question guiding this study is: “What are the perceptions of working Iranian graduate students on the impact of servant leadership’s when adapting to the Canadian culture?” To address this question, qualitative data were collected from Iranian graduate students at a small, private, Canadian university who were currently working in Canada. Data was gathered through questionnaires was designed to capture the participants’ perspectives. Content analysis identified recurring patterns and key themes related to SL and cultural adaptation such as empathy, support, and inclusion, creating a conducive environment for both cultural assimilation and integration. Moreover, such leaders foster a sense of belonging and encourage active participation in the Canadian community.
