Effective Leadership Styles for Remote Work in the Asian Business Sector

Abstract

The shift to remote work following the COVID-19 pandemic has created leadership challenges, particularly in the business sector in Asia, where hierarchical and collectivist workplace cultures traditionally rely on direct supervision. Studies indicate ineffective remote leadership resulting in disengagement, reduced productivity, and high turnover, with some industries experiencing a 20-30% decline in employee performance. This study is a systematic review synthesizing research on transformational, servant, and digital leadership styles to assess their effectiveness in managing remote teams in Asia. This systematic review analyzed existing peer-reviewed studies to identify patterns and gaps using databases such as Academic Search Ultimate and Google Scholar. The key themes identified include the importance of effective communication, employee engagement, and leadership adaptability. These themes are crucial for enhancing productivity, fostering trust, and ensuring sustainable remote work environments. This study highlights the necessity of hybrid leadership models blending digital tools with human-centric approaches and the findings contribute to leadership frameworks tailored to the evolving demands of remote work in Asia. Future research can employ quantitative surveys to measure leadership effectiveness in remote Asian workplaces and qualitative case studies to explore leadership adaptation strategies in multinational corporations.
