Barriers to Certification for Internationally Trained Healthcare Professionals in Canada

This study investigates the barriers faced by internationally trained healthcare professionals (ITHPs) in securing certification within Canadian healthcare system. Despite playing crucial roles toward facilitating healthcare diversity and workforce sustainability, systemic barriers hinder their integration. A 20 – ITHP survey captured extensive challenges in terms of issues of accessing certification information, recognition of foreign credentials, cultural differences, and financial constraints. These barriers frequently cluster, hindering the certification process and affecting ITHPs’ confidence. The study emphasizes the importance of targeted interventions to enhance transparency in certification processes, improve access to language proficiency programs, and develop supportive policies. Closing these gaps, the study aims to contribute to an inclusive Canadian healthcare system, facilitating the integration of skilled professionals and improving healthcare provisions.
