JOISS Research’s Successful Inaugural Annual Event on the United Nations International Day of Education 2025
JOISS Research successfully held its first annual event on January 24, 2025, in recognition of the United Nations’ International Day of Education. The event underscored the organization’s commitment to advancing knowledge and fostering scholarly exploration across disciplines. There were over 80 distinguished guests in attendance, including China’s Consul Cui, Mimi and Vice Consul Liu, Diyi from the diplomatic community and esteemed scholars including Co-Founder & Honorary Dean Dr. John Han of ELITE Innovation College Cambridge United Kingdom, Dean of Education at Trinity Western University Dr. Lara Ragpot, and Program Director and Faculty Council Chair at Adler University Dr. Jason Walker.
The inaugural event featured insightful presentations and moving performances, emphasizing the pivotal role of education in societal development. Founder and Editor Dr. Hyne-Ju Huizenga of JOISS Research, addressed the distinguished guests, emphasizing the importance of disseminating information to an educated society. She spoke on the mission of JOISS Research serving international scholars with scholarships based on both merit and need, and a platform for publication to contribute to the global dialogue on educational advancement, aligning with its commitment to academic excellence and knowledge dissemination.
Vice President Dr. Philip Laird of Trinity Western University officially opened the event with his keynote speech on the importance of preserving human agency in an era of artificial intelligence (AI) and automation. He advocated for focusing on cultural, adaptive, green, and emotional intelligences, integrating them with AI to address global challenges and promote a more equitable future.
Abisola Oshinusi, Law (LLB), Legal Practice (BL), Leadership (MA), and International Criminal Justice (PgCert), Legal Practitioner, and CIP Investigations Lead at BC Hydro, emphasized the importance of leveraging AI responsibly to create an inclusive and educated society, ensuring AI serves all of humanity rather than just a privileged few.
Wawmeesh Hamilton, the Jack Webster Award-winning CBC indigenous affairs reporter, was recognized as this year’s Special Thematic Award Journalist of the Year, spoke on disseminating the good, the bad, and the difficult to an educated society for them to respond.
This year’s Distinguished Scholar of the Year, Dr. Mosi Dorbayani, spoke passionately about the transformative power of knowledge in shaping future generations. He underscored the importance of research in contributing to a deeper understanding of society, reinforcing the essential role of education and ethical scholarship in today’s world.
A captivating live music performance by Langara Philosophy Professor Dr. Richard Johns on violin and Theodore Johns on piano added elegance to the proceedings and the night concluded with a book signing by Dr. Mosi Dorbayani’s latest publication, receiving enthusiastic engagement from attendees.
