Servant Leadership Impact on Employee Engagement in Hong Kong’s Insurance Industry

Abstract

The significant problem of this study is the challenge organizations face in implementing leadership styles that effectively enhance employee engagement in Hong Kong’s insurance industry, where high workloads, long hours, and strict performance expectations often lead to disengagement and burnout. Employee engagement levels in high-pressure industries such as insurance can drop below 40%, affecting productivity and retention. This issue is critical in Hong Kong with its competitive $50 billion insurance market, where maintaining engagement is essential for organizational success. This study employed a systematic review of the literature on servant leadership’s impact on employee engagement in Hong Kong’s insurance industry, a high-pressure environment characterized by long working hours, high sales targets, and strict regulatory challenges. The findings emphasize servant leadership can enhance employee engagement through key mediators such as trust, psychological safety, and job satisfaction. Servant leadership practices create supportive and inclusive work environments and can help reduce burnout and disengagement. Future research can utilize longitudinal studies to evaluate the long-term impact of servant leadership on employee retention and engagement and mixed methods approaches combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews can provide deeper insights into the adaptability of servant leadership across various organizational contexts.
