Reforming Canadian Labor Laws to Strengthen Servant Leadership in Construction

Abstract

The Canadian construction industry, employing over 1.4 million workers and contributing 7% to the national GDP, faces significant leadership and labor law challenges. Worker protection, job security, and collective bargaining remain critical in both unionized and non-unionized sectors. Addressing these challenges is crucial for fostering a resilient workforce and improving retention rates. This study employs a systematic review of the literature, synthesizing multiple research studies to comprehensively understand labor law reforms and leadership in the construction industry. Literature was sourced using keywords related to servant leadership, labor law, and construction. Key themes uncovered include labor law reforms, servant leadership, and workplace well-being. These themes are significant as they inform policy changes and support ethical leadership and workforce stability. Strengthened labor laws enhance job security, while servant leadership fosters a positive work environment, increasing worker engagement and productivity. Future research can adopt a mixed-methods approach with a quantitative survey analyzing existing data in labor market statistics and employee retention rates to provide empirical insights, along with a qualitative survey exploring leadership challenges in different provinces to offer in-depth perspectives on the impact of labor law reforms on leadership effectiveness and worker welfare.
